Vision & Mandate
To develop and maintain a healthy Dehcho arts community

Main Objectives
         To nurture emerging artists & support established artists by encouraging; research, production, presentation, promotion, & dissemination of new works in; contemporary visual arts, traditional Dene crafts, & other arts practices as well as providing networking & educational opportunities & a general resource centre to arts practitioners.

The OSCS is committed to serving artists and the arts community in the Dehcho through

Principle Activities
OSC Gallery (Exhibition Space/Office/General Resource Centre)
Presents works by contemporary visual artists from across Canada (one exhibition per year guaranteed to an NWT artist)
- Year round programming, approximately seven, six week exhibitions (including an annual student/community outreach exhibition & Dehcho artists exhibition)
- Holds selection of contemporary art & other relevant publications, grant information, computer/internet access, opportunity listings, & knowledgeable personnel as resources to artists & general public

Open Sky Festival (OSF)
Annual multidisciplinary arts festival held since 2001
- Largest OSCS programming event
- Serves as one of the only presentation & dissemination opportunities for artists & audiences in the region
- Features annual special project (OSF 2010; traditional moosehide tanning workshop/demonstration held over 1 week / Artswalk; work by NWT artists installed in various alternative locations throughout community)

Year Round Arts Workshops
- Key audience development/education activities
- Participants offered opportunities for interaction with practicing artists & insights on technical aspects of their practices
- Artists benefit by educating, developing, & engaging audiences in a unique & meaningful way
- Creates opportunities to promote awareness of traditional arts practices

Outreach Activities
Class tours / activities held for school groups
- Artwork-Kraftwerk open house nights held weekly at gallery/resource centre
- Community arts / partnership projects, providing guest artists as resource for other community organization programming

Fort Simpson Heritage Centre Society
OSCS has partnered with the Fort Simpson Historical Society to restore a historical building to serve as programming facilities for both organizations
- MOU signed in 2009
- Demolition & preliminary construction phase (Spring 2010)

Open Sky Creative Society Capacity Building
OSCS engaged in an ongoing process of strengthening its organizational capacity in all areas
- OSCS is striving to contribute to strengthening the overall capacity of the arts/creative community in the Dehcho
